This pattern is recommended for
beginner to intermediate embroiderers. It is for an
eight inch embroidery hoop and uses
seven types of stitches and
ten colors of floss. The instructions outlined below
are also included in the PDF download.
For this project, I personally found couching the pumpkin vines the
hardest part, as this was my first time using a couching stitch. The
design itself is perfect for autumn, especially Thanksgiving, and even
includes space in the middle to add your own personal message. It could
be a great gift for a Thanksgiving or Friendsgiving host, or a fun treat
for yourself!
Materials
Fabric
For this piece I recommend using a
light- to medium-weight cotton. I used white for the
piece in the sample image, but other light colors should work, too,
especially lighter shades of warm, autumnal tones like oranges, reds,
golds, and tans. A fabric with a light, unobtrusive pattern could also
add dimension to the piece.
Floss
I recommend using three strands of standard six-strand
embroidery floss for this design.
Ten colors of floss should be used to complete this
pattern in the following specific shades (feel free to choose your own,
though-I almost never use a pattern's recommended colors-it's more fun
for me that way!):
-
3
orange
shades:
-
A red-orange, for the ridges of the pumpkin
-
A yellow-orange, for the light spot on the
pumpkin and for the markings on the right gourd
-
A mid-toned orange, for the rest of the pumpkin
-
3 yellow shades:
-
A bright yellow for the left gourd, and to add
depth to the right gourd if desired
- A light yellow for the right gourd
- A golden yellow for the wheat
-
2 green shades:
-
a dark green for the leaves and the markings on
the left gourd
- a bright green for the pumpkin's vines
-
2 brown shades:
- a golden brown for the wheat stalks
- a dark brown for the gourd stems
Instructions
Here are my recommended steps to follow:
-
Start by using a stem stitch for the wheat stalks,
leaving space for intersecting leaves.
-
Outline the produce at the bottom of the hoop.
- Use the stem stitch again for the gourds.
-
I used a chain stitch for the pumpkin for
variety. For now, only stitch the outline of the pumpkin-we’ll do
the other ridges later.
-
Fill in the pumpkin using the long-and-short stitch.
Remember to use your yellow-orange for the middle to add some depth to
the pumpkin.
-
Stitch the ridges of the pumpkin with the same stitch used for the
outline. You can have these ridges appear as a single line, as I’ve
done in the sample image, or you can have them break off near the
middle, as indicated in the pattern.
-
Fill in the markings on the gourds using a
satin stitch. If desired, use the bright yellow to
add depth to the right gourd as indicated in the sample image.
Note: If you’re a beginner, it may be helpful to
outline these markings with a stem stitch first, as
I’ve done in the sample image.
-
Fill in the rest of each gourd using a satin stitch.
-
Stitch the stems of the produce, using brown for the gourds and green
for the pumpkin if desired.
- Outline the stem using a stem stitch.
- Fill in the stem using a satin stitch.
-
Create the pumpkin vine using the couching stitch.
- Add leaves to the vines using the leaf stitch.
-
Add the wheat seeds to the stalks using a
detached chain stitch.
