Totentanz (German for Dance of Death, or dans macabre) is a series of embroidery pieces made in the summer of 2020 during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in New York. They are based on European etchings from the 14th through 17th centuries, when outbreaks of the Black Death plagued Europe every few decades. These interpretations put a darkly humorous modern twist on the original works, showing how the more the things change, the more things (humans, in this case) stay the same.

I love pieces inspired by nature and animals. They can be a challenge, which is what makes them so interesting to stitch. One of my favorite parts of the process is trying to capture the texture of feathers, fur, or scales with thread. Custom pet portraits are available in my Etsy store, so check them out!

As you can probably guess from the Totentanz series, I'm a big history nerd, and I love engaging with historical art styles. These pieces are based on historical media, from medieval etchings and illuminations to Victorian illustrations. I also love working with vintage tattoo art and scientific illustrations.

These pieces are a few of my favorites. Most of them have some kind of nerdy movie reference, and some gave me a chance to experiment and play with the medium of embroidery and applique. Some of these are part of larger collections, so be sure to check out my Instagram if you like what you see!
